The Genius laments that his father should have waited until they were ready, but concedes that at least now they know about Cassie's existence.

It was originally developed as a screenplay, and probably could’ve been okay as a full length novel, but at this length the flashbacks took over from any kind of character development - the heroine was too boring for words, and the plot was just stupid. Thoroughly disgusted, Cobalt warned Cassie and had her pending transition through Witness Protection expedited. The Fury eventually gets the upper hand and throws Gary into a construction pit, then grabs the entire Stratosphere Tower and throws it down like a spear, and when the dust settles there is no sign of Cobalt Gold. Cassie, now aged 29 and working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles, watches the television broadcast as her eldest brother, Greg, aka Cobalt Green, steps forward to take on the Fury. The only one who has a chance of stopping him is the titular Cobalt Blue, the daughter of the deceased American superhero.I’d say it COULD have MAYBE worked as a teen action book, but even then it would have been SOOOOO BAD, because once you take away the terrible bits, guess what? I have adored the author's writing style for years as he takes his time setting up the stakes for the adventure while fleshing out the characters judiciously so that the story gains from it. In the post-novel interview, Reilly revealed that he had begun writing Cobalt Blue as a screenplay, before expanding the story into the current, novel version. The story picks up 35yrs after the discovery of the original probe, after all these events have taken place.

That explains the uneven pacing, but the bigger problem is the author turning a subpar story into a bombastic adventure that makes no sense from start to finish. Having long been lauded as the most skilled fighter of all the Cobalts, Golden Gary provides a greater challenge for the Fury than his siblings had, with their fight lasting 30 minutes and seeing Gary crack the Fury's visor. This was a fast read for me and I look forward to maybe a series or a kickass Netflix series as it would be perfect for the screen! As a book, it is a novella, and until the end, I couldn’t figure out why the book reads more like like on abbreviated origin story being pushed just before the next superhero team up movie. As with all stories like this, I think it is important not to start digging too deep into various details, and just enjoy the book for what it is, a really fun, enthralling action-packed superhero story. As soon as she passes, the Fury - no longer possessing an equal to oppose him - announces that he will soon begin a campaign of destruction against the U.
