Description

The Canon EOS 1100D has a great feature of recording videos in HD at 720 p resolution at 25 and 30 frames per second. The Canon EOS 1100D lets you experiment with several lenses as it is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses. The focal length range of the 1100D SLR is 18 - 55 mm, while the aperture ranges from f/3.5 - 5.5. This overcast scene is served well by some of the picture modes, particularly monochrome, and even the portrait and landscape modes boost the saturation a little Low light performance also impresses, with the 1100D able to deliver perfectly usable results right up to its maximum sensitivity setting of ISO 6400, so long as you’re not pixel peeping that is. The camera does an especially good job in the mid ranges too, with ISO 400 to ISO 1600 delivering very good image quality that remains perfectly usable even when viewed at 100%. The camera is equipped with a great lens-sensor arrangement that allows you to take pictures across a wide spectrum of lighting conditions. This is also seen in the low light performance of the camera. Dimly lit subjects can be captured with minimum image noise and without resorting to the flash by changing ISO, bulb and shutter speed settings. The settings within the camera can be used to optimize the lighting levels around the subject in focus. The Google Pixel 6 may not be the latest Google smartphone any more, but it might still be the best value HD EOS Movie mode: Shoot stunning HD video at 25 or 30fps, with automatic exposure control leaving you free to concentrate on the action. Footage can be edited on your PC or Mac, or played directly on an HD TV via the camera’s HDMI connection. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a small and light DSLR camera with an all-plastic shell, weighing in at just under 500g with the battery and memory card fitted and measuring 129.9 x 99.7 x 77.9 mm. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1100D / T3 feels more than solid enough for an entry-level DSLR, on par with the more expensive 600D but as you'd expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. It has a narrow, mildly uncomfortable hand-grip that unfortunately doesn't have any textured surface to aid your grip, with the entire body finished in an appealingly glossy but rather too smooth finish. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 1100D / T3 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white mark. When shooting outdoors at night and in tungsten light, it is advisable to use the appropriate white balance preset or take a custom reading because the camera does little to take away the yellow hue. Metering Overall image quality from the 1100D and 18-55mm IS kit lens is very good. For all the minor misgivings we may have listed above, it still produces the same consistently high levels of image quality that other, more expensive, Canon DSLR models do and for this it’s hard to fault. Despite being nice and bright, the viewfinder is noticeably small and covers 95% of the scene, meaning the final image will contain a little bit more than you see through the viewfinder. Looking through the viewfinder you’ll find nine AF points spread across the screen that light up as red dots, depending on which is being used as a focus point. Basic shooting information – including shutter speed, aperture, metering and ISO – is displayed underneath the viewfinder.

The metering modes offered by the camera include Evaluative, Centre-weighted and Partial, which uses 10% of the frame area - the 1100D doesn't have a spot metering option. In use, we found that the Evaluative metering mode provided fairly good exposures with a variety of subjects, thanks to the advanced 63-zone metering sensor. When shooting contrasty scenes, it is worth using the Evaluative mode in conjunction with the Auto Lighting Optimiser feature, accessible by hitting the Q button and using the interactive status panel. The frame rate remains the same as before, with the 1100D offering 3fps in JPEG format, but the burst now lasts roughly 30% longer, giving up to 820 frames. Up to five raw files can be recorded at 2fps. When buying a DSLR body from a well-established manufacturer such as Canon, one is investing into a whole existing system. The label ‘entry-level’ is truly apt for the EOS 1100D, as it is compatible with the entire EOS range of EF and EF-S lenses, as well as Canon flashguns. All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 12 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb. Like all EOS models, the 1100D records in both JPEG and CR2 raw format, and images measure 4272×2848 pixels at their highest resolution. The 14-bit Digic 4 processor, found in all other current Canon DSLRs, is an improvement over the last generation 12-bit processor found in the 1000D and should ensure fine colour reproduction. To process raw files, the camera comes with Canon’s excellent Digital Photo Professional software. There are a number of drive modes available on the Canon EOS 1100D / T3. These include Single Shot, Continuous Shooting, Self-timer and Remote Controlled Shooting. In Continuous Shooting mode, the camera can take pictures at a speed of 3 frames per second for up to 830 Large Fine JPEGs or 2fps for up to 5 RAW files. This is slower than the EOS 600D, especially if you're shooting in RAW, although the massive 830 shot buffer for JPEGs should cover most eventualities! A main difference during these three years is the now common presence in DSLRs of HD video. The 1100D brings this feature to a Canon entry-level model, with 720p recording at 30fps or 25fps. This is one of the most significant improvements over the 1000D and is not a feature of the EOS 450D’s sensor. Another step forward is an increased sensitivity range, rising by 2EV to ISO 100-6400 with no expanded setting. The new processor should go some way to help produce images with low levels of noise.

Despite its budget price-tag, the Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a responsive and intuitive DSLR that offers many of the key features of its bigger and more expensive sibling, the 600D / T3i, in a smaller and lighter body. This concludes our evaluation of the EOS 1100D's ergonomics, handling, feature set and performance. Let's take a look at its Image Quality next. The 1110D can record images as lossless 14-bit Raw files (in Canon’s .CR2 format) or as compressed JPEG files, or indeed both simultaneously. JPEGs further benefit from a choice of Fine or Regular quality, with the sensor able to output a maximum 4272 x 2848 pixels at the full 12MP resolution. This can, of course, be lowered to suit your requirements with options to record JPEG images at 6.3MP, 3.4MP, 2.5MP and 0.3MP, again with a choice of Fine or Standard quality. Image files can be given a star rating of between one and five. This helps no end with organisation once files have been loaded onto the computer.

General

Canon EOS cameras have had an easily navigated menu system for a while now, and current EOS users will be right at home here. As with the 60D and new 600D, the 1100D has a handy image-rating system in place: when images are imported to a computer, the star rating helps to organise files.
