You could laugh at some of its over-the-top machismo but I feel like Eggers is inviting criticism of that very machismo, so enjoy the movie on one level where it indulges all the Old World violence, and then enjoy it on another level where it subverts and castigates the same Old World violence.

Say what you will about the importance of accuracy in a Viking movie set in the 10th century AD, but there’s no denying that with The Northman, Eggers has indeed, created the definitive Viking movie. The Northman is a horribly violent, nihilistic and chaotic story about the endless cycle of violence, the choice between loving your friends and hating your enemies – which turns out to be no choice at all, and the thread of fate down which masculinity’s delicious toxin drips. A code for a digital copy of the film, redeemable through Movies Anywhere and other services like VUDU and AppleTV/iTunes, is included.If you enjoyed - or even appreciated - The VVitch, The Lighthouse, The Green Knight, and Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising - the last of which feels very much like a Refn-driven spiritual sibling to The Northman - then Eggers' latest will almost certainly be for you.
