Therefore, before, when I did not have a copy of the Roman Missal, Study Edition (to be reviewed later), I would often turn to the Lectionary Table. The only trouble is I only read a few lines of the bible now before I get side tracked delving into that verse, i. One other gripe: while the page numbers are placed in the lower outer margins, the Book/Chapter/Verse location identifiers are in the middle of the page header, making it unnecessarily inefficient to find the passage you seek. Donald Senior, CP, is President Emeritus, Chancellor, and Professor of New Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Only negative is that this just covers the NT, Ignatius Press is working on the OT (with a few individual OT books released such as Daniel). The annotations are significantly expanded compared to the classic RSV edition, and are more interpretive. And, let me just start by saying that this is not the Gideons' "Little Red Bible," not that I have anything against the Gideons.

Mine is the hardback version, which as a book is well made and durable, with consistently good quality print on paper which is not too thin - a pleasure to handle and use. The reader can see at a glance how and where a given Biblical passage is used in liturgy, be that in the Lectionary, the Missal, the Liturgy of the Hours, or any of the other liturgical books. This edition is a major revision of the Catholic Study Bible, a standard resource for believers and advanced students.

Although the guides are (somewhat annoyingly) set apart from the books they comment on, they are helpfully cross-referenced to the biblical text (and vice-versa). As a teenager, I left the Church after the director of my congregations CCD (essentially, Sunday school that is meant to prepare youth for the sacrament of confirmation) discouraged all questioning. Therefore, all of the supporting notes to the NT text refer frequently to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) but equally to Holy Tradiiton and the deposit of faith which brings an immense unifying feel to the whole scriptural presence of the Church. He teaches theology and Scripture at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and has published several best-selling books, including Rome Sweet Home , The Lamb's Supper , and the Catholic Bible Dictionary .

Because The [Oxford] Catholic Study Bible is a NABRE, its notes are the same as any other NABRE Bible (see above). It adds a whopping 525-page introduction consisting of general Bible information and a mini-commentary “Reading Guide” for each individual book. notes), and is segregated from the two-column footnotes by either a single thin horizontal line, or by double lines framing a list of sparse cross-references. The best edition of the New Testament I have read: the translation is in clear, current, literal English (a Catholic update to the RSV), it has plenty of footnotes if you have questions about particular passages, and it has explanatory essays and maps. The paper is on the cool side, the margins are modest, and the volume provides a couple ribbon markers. The RSV has no notes that go along with the translation, so different study Bibles exist based on the translation.
