Most places have a counter and tables; the master (usually one or two, along with a few understudies) does his work right in front of the customers at the counter to ensure that his ingredients are fresh. If you’re at the counter, why not enjoy a conversation with the master? There are different types of Inarizushi depending on the region in Japan. The shape can also be different. There are no rules as to what should go inside temakizushi but you must have suitable rice to make sushi rice. The best grain rice for sushi in general is short grain rice. It is often sold as “sushi rice”. You can buy sushi rice at supermarkets or Asian grocery stores.

A typical Japanese meal consists of a main dish, a couple of side dishes, a soup and rice. I try to come up with a combination of dishes with a variety of flavours, colours, textures and make-ahead dishes. To fill an aburaage pouch, you will need about 30-35g of sushi rice (small handful). You can fill with more or less rice but 30-35g would make it the right size, I think. It has generally been said that sushi tastes better when eaten rice-up, although this is according to preference. There are quiet, local beaches and heaving popular ones; gentle coves for families and reef breaks for surfers. Peak summer is July and August, when many beaches have temporary huts, festivals, and firework displays. Note that the Japanese sun is strong! Many locals wear hats or hide under beach umbrellas.The most common traditional Inarizushi is a very simple rice dish that is basically the oval-shaped or triangle-shaped sushi rice ball wrapped in a seasoned aburaage (deep-fried thin tofu). Sometimes the sushi rice contains roasted sesame seeds, cooked vegetables and/or hijiki seaweed. When the rice is cooked, you need to add sushi vinegar and mix. Sushi vinegar is called sushisu (寿司酢) and can be made from rice wine vinegar and sugar and salt. Please refer to the post Japanese Dressings. You can also buy a bottle of sushi vinegar from the supermarket and Asian grocery stores. Don’t get it mixed up with rice wine vinegar. Sushi vinegar should be sweet.

Gunkan-maki– The same as a nigiri-zushi but with a piece of seaweed wrapped around it. Sea urchin and salmon roe are often in gunkan-maki form The modern version of Inarizushi is more decorative with colourful toppings, as you can see some of them in my photos. We have a family temakizushi party or two every year at my place, even with no reason to celebrate anything. We just get an urge to have it once in a while. All we need is for someone to say “we haven’t had temakizushi for a while” or “I want to eat sushi”. Then another will say, “yeah, let’s have temakizushi, mum!”. Sushi at formal sushi restaurants may either come in ones or twos, although you may designate your preference; if you want to try a wider variety, there is no problem in asking the master to make you one of each. When you turn the pouch inside out, you will get quite a different texture and the colour of the aburaage is lighter. The method of making inside out Inarizushi is the same as the traditional one. Decorating Inarizushi with ToppingsTokyo is famous for many things, but beaches are not one of them. Outside of the city limits, however, the prefectures of Kanagawa, Chiba, and Shizuoka have thriving beach scenes. It’d be overselling to call these spots world-class – head to Okinawa for that – but if you’re in and around the capital during the summer and crave a little surf, there are many great options. Among the various sushi recipes, Inari Sushi is one of the easiest. Unlike other types of sushi, Inari Sushi is very sweet and some people eat it at tea times. What is Inari Sushi Open the pouch and place the rice ball in it. The rice should fill about half or two thirds of the pouch. Cover the opening by folding one side of the aburaage, then fold both edges inwards. Fold the other side over and place the Inarizushi folded side down. Inari Sushi Variations

Thus, you could easily stuff yourself with sushi and not pay more than 1000 or 2000 yen! Kaiten-zushi is a great form of fast food - not only affordable, but also healthy. If short grain is not available, you could use medium grain rice but other grain such as long grain, and Jasmine rice are not suited for sushi. Sushi Vinegar Almost synonymous with Japanese cuisine and one of Japan’s major symbols, sushi is one of the most mind-boggling yet delicious types of food in the world. The idea of eating raw fish may make you cringe at first, but there’s a reason why it is the beloved food of the Japanese people for centuries and why it has taken the world by storm in recent years.

Warning! There are lots of photos today and the post is a bit long as there were so many ingredients involved in my family temakizushi. But you can make it with less ingredients. My Inarizushi lunch for school excursions when I was a kid was filled with only simple Inarizushi with no toppings. I am not sure when Inarizushi with toppings was invented, but I am pretty sure it didn’t exist when I was a kid.

Sushi masters, or taisho, take great pride in their work, treating sushi-making almost like an art after decades of training; thus, it’s essential to know the different manners involved in eating sushi and making the most out of the delicious experience. Home-made temakizushi (手巻き寿司) looks fancy but is very easy to prepare. Cut the sushi fillings, display everything on the table and let the crowd serve themselves. It is fun and great for a little party with family and friends.
