The book highlights the era so well, the way women are treated in society and the audacity that men have.

She isn’t your typical Victorian woman, going against social conventions by not wanting to get married and pursuing a career instead. I quickly warmed to the character of Violet, loving her spirit and total disregard for social conventions. The why of her vanishing is as important to Violet as the how, and she’s determined not to give up until she discovers what happened all those years ago. I know this is a debut novel for this author and I think with some experience, there will come better pacing for future books. This was ploddingly slow-paced and wont to drift off down a completely irrelevant side story, rather than focus on the main plotline. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. However, she’s up for pretty much anything – except house cleaning – leading one character to remark ‘You are the most infuriating female I’ve ever met’. I took a bit of a break from all my Regency romances this fall in favor of some spooky books for September and October! Other group were great at telling each other their thoughts and opinions and it was interesting to read everyone’s views throughout.

But Violet rails against this, wanting to make her own way in life and pursue a career, rather than making marriage her priority and only goal in life. But to keep ourselves on our toes, we have a rule that author gender is alternated, girl-boy-girl-boy, and the continents always rotated (with occasional glitches). Took me a while to warm up to Violet, but she has a lot of character growth and it's easy to root for her. She comes up against Mr Knight (who I felt was a right douche bag throughout) he looked down on her, treated her how I imagine a woman with her own mind would be treated back in those days.

Violet is an independent and ambitious 28-year-old in the 1890s, constantly having to say she is ‘not inclined to marry’. Violet Hamilton would prefer a profession to a husband, at twenty-seven she continues to fend off the latter, much to her father’s disapproval, but is yet to find the former. It was filled with incredible adventures and sprinkled with insights that could apply to today's cultural and political landscape.

Violet wants to test society’s boundaries, at her age she’s considered a spinster any way, she makes some amusing blunders along the way and discovers the possibility her mother is still alive. Sometimes the novels chosen are new, often they are from the backlist and occasionally re-issued from way back. Finding the missing is no job for a lady, but when Violet hires a seaside detective to help, she sets off a chain of events that will put more than just her reputation at risk. Her earliest recollection is of seeing a man on foot overtaken and shot down by a horseman directly in front of a doorstep on which she sat eating a slice of bread sprinkled with brown sugar; it and the victim fell into the same dust at the same instant.
