Despite a colourful history marked by closures, financial troubles and even a change of name, today Tobermory is a thriving, expressive and unique distillery, true to its idyllic location on the Hebridean island of Mull. The peat opens up very exuberantly on the nose, expressing in short a strongly marine and salty soul, of smoked herring and olives in brine, with dates, baked apple, blood orange and liquorice root as spectators. It also has a vein between metal and rubber, more intense in length, slightly disturbing. This 9 year old Ledaig single malt whisky, bottled in 2019, is one of 411 bottles aged exclusively in a refill hogshead.

They are a functional feature and also make great fridge magnets when your done. Shout out to Deanston for also breaking the dull cork mould. Believed to have been laden with jewels, we have finished our smoky Ledaig signature expression in hand selected Rioja casks in honour of the Spanish treasure buried deep off our shoreline. This Ledaig limited edition is a demonstration of Hebridean artistry. Fully matured in Bordeaux red wine casks, with layers of heather and pine cones, intertwining with woody sea salt leading to floral notes and lime pastilles. However, the ship in question – depicted on the box in Turneresque expressionist splendour, listing forward engulfed in waves as it fights through a ferocious storm – has nothing to do with Nelson or Napoleon or Russel Crowe for that matter.
