I used the blue preston 12" hook length box without really comparing it to anything else. It was simple and did its job if not perfectly ideal. I've not had the issue of transferring hooklengths between boxes so the differing dimensions were not an issue. Then I bought a guru box and to me it was clear the preston box was left a little in the shade. The guru offered better quality, was more rigid and the pegs had a small retaining flange which stopped the hooklengths sliding off when tying around the pegs which I had with the preston. But this can be overcome by using a strip of wood with approriately spaced headless nails. The guru one is bulky in comparsion, the preston is lovely and slim so as always its horse for courses. I did see a 12" version of the guru box this Fri, again quality piece of kit but just a tad bulky. At the current time Guru is the box of choice but my new seatbox has limited space and shallow drawers and the preston fits these nicely so i think both have their place offering differing benefits and pitfalls.
