Description

There's certainly pineapple - charred pineapple and a lemony citrus flavour, too on the lengthy finish. Machrie Moor 10 years old is bottled in very small quantities every year and is f ully matured in 1st fill Bourbon Casks for ten years and bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

It’s 52 hours which – incidentally – is about half the length of the time the island’s brewery takes, and isn’t enough time to let secondary fermentation really kick in and cause all sorts of wonderful flavours through assorted lactobactillacaea. Arran is beautiful and diverse, and perhaps islands are especially good at imprinting their characters on us in ways whisky can tap into. This cask strength peated expression of the Arran Single Malt perfectly captures the rugged beauty and lore of the landscape. We have the right to ask you to provide proof of your age and/or to provide further identification to prevent underage usage and/or for any other legal or legitimate purpose. Rather than their usual battles on the martial arts mats they are going to let the whiskies do the fighting. Bottled as somewhat of a counterpoint to the bourbon cask matured Barrel Reserve the Bodega Sherry Cask really highlights the excellent versatility of the spirit coming off the stills at Arran.

This whisky embodies all the classic fresh style of Arran 10 Year Old with a twist of peat smoke in the tail. Until recently, Machrie Moor had two standard expressions: a NAS version at 46% and another NAS version at cask strength.Of course, a flight of two whiskies is in no way sufficient to generalise about peat and the difference it makes – except for the smoke and ashes which I’d suspect to be everybody’s first guess. As you say, it is less a question of a whisky’s particular terroir, more the sense of places we carry with us. Full disclosure: I have purchased bottles of both whiskies for this review and shared them with other members of my whisky group.

The palate has the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries before an intriguing finish of citrus, smoke, chocolate, vanilla and coconut. As expected, it is impeccably distilled but the smokey peatiness adds a new level - I almost said thrill - to a superb product. The Service and your account are for your personal use only and may not be shared with any third parties. This is a fairly decent peated offering from Arran which won’t be challenging the punchy peat monsters that exist, yet I’m sure that was never the intention.
